Larry Friend lives in Libertyville, Illinois. He is a firm believer that the study of nature leads to better understanding of life. Sidney “Mindy” Makis lives in Boca Raton, Florida. She is a registered nurse and a talented illustrator. Squirrelly the Squirrel and Starlet is the second book from this brother and sister team; their first book, Icy the Iceberg.
Have you always wanted to be an author? I never thought I would be an author. This changed several years ago when my wife, Nancy, and I took a cruise to Alaska. One day the weather was cold and windy. I decided to go to the ship’s library and read. While there a story came into my mind and I decided to put it on paper. Several hours after I returned to the stateroom, Nancy asked me where I had been for so long. I responded that I had written a story with the title of “Icy the Iceberg”.
If you ask my children and grandchildren, they will confirm that I have always been a storyteller. I find humor in many of my life experiences and I seem to have the ability to include this humor in my stories.
How did you come up with “Squirrelly the Squirrel and Starlett” book? As I watched the squirrels and other animals from inside and outside our house, I started telling stories about their interactions. After awhile, I decided that I should start placing these stories in a journal. As the number of stories increased, I became inspired to put them in book form. Many nights I would wake up with a new idea and go to the kitchen table and start writing. Often these sessions would last for several hours.
Are you working on another book now? Yes, About two years ago, I started waking up and writing late at night. I was writing about a white dove that landed in our backyard in Chicago about 35 years ago. The bird was given the name of Snowy by our children. Much of the book has been written and I am now more motivated to finish the book. I have a goal of getting “Snowy the white Dove of Love” to the publisher in about a year.
